Essence Magazine Hollywood Issue
Well it may be full of the same old faces but I applaud Essence for doing their own gatefold cover Hollywood Issue. I have a love/hate relationship with the magazine which in my view has been recycling content for the last 15 years. At the end of the day however, it really is the only magazine of its type on the newsstand that caters to Black women so I still end up buying it month after month.

I am so glad I am not the only one who finds that magazine as dull as dish water. It looks great on the cover and the first few pages are fantastic and then it starts to go wrong somewhere after the book pages. To add insult to injury it is wafer thin yet the same price as other bulky mags such as Elle and Marie Claire. I always felt bad slagging it off as it is a Black magazine and there are not that many around. Yes I know that production costs are high and good articles and photography costs money but please give Essence an injection of stories that are original and sexy. All it takes is some imagination and you are onto a winner. I can only take so many 'empower yourself' articles before I fall asleep. This issue looks a lot better and I will definately check it out and if the publications reads as well as it looks, I may even buy it.
Oh don't get me started. Essence has the power to be so much more but the editors insist on doing the same old articles over and over and over again. I don't know what it would take to get them to realize there is another path they could take that would really revitalize their image.
ugh, i grew up with this magazine but it has no appeal for me at all beyond sentimental value.
this is a market that is really lacking. i had alot of hope for suede magazine but their time was cut short too soon.
