Zoe Saldana Covers Latina Magazine (and Other Titles)

Latina magazine has been diversifying its cover subjects lately and included more Afro-Latinas in the mix. Sessilee Lopez graced the March 2009 cover.

I rarely get to the movies but I am intrigued by the new Star Trek installment. I had a few other actresses in mind to play Uhura when I first heard about the film but from what I've heard, Zoe does a pretty good job in the role.

Did any of you see the flick last weekend? Was it worth the effort?

ETA: Women's Health and Entertainment Weekly covers.

The new Star Trek movie was really good. It was filled with diverse characters, a strong storyline, and it made me remember why I loved Star Trek as a kid. Go see it. Zoe Saldana is really good as Uhura and gets a fair share of screen time.

Sessilee Lopez is gorrrrrrrgeous! Zoe is just an alright actress. She always seems to play dancers (on a slightly unrelated note) and I guess she has a background in dancing- interesting, because she doesn't appear to be that strong of a dancer. All in all I like her, though, and want to check out the new start trek- I've heard wonders.

I am so happy for Zoe. I always thought she was very talented and needed more roles. Startrek is an awesome movie and she did an awesome job as Ahora.I think Nichelle Nichols would be proud.

Speaking of Nichelle Nichols, was she at any of the premieres? Has she said anything publically about Zoe's refurbished role?

I definitely want to see the movie this weekend if I can manage it.

I think it's great that Gene Rodenberry's very evolved view of BW allowed Nichell Nichols to portray a ground breaking, non-stereotypical role in the 60's and made it possible for Zoe Saldana to portray a BW in a much needed positive role in 2009. Hopefully, Hollywood will take note and create more unconventional but positive roles for Black actresses in the future.

It's also good to see Latina magazine featuring Afro-latinas. As an Afro-latina (of Dominican descent like Zoe) I feel it's important that ALL Latinas be acknowledged.
