Chanel Iman - Harper's Bazaar - 12/08

Chanel Iman has a very nice multipage spread in the current issue of Harper's Bazaar. It's the largest spread devoted to a black model that I can recall seeing in quite awhile. Too bad the stylist couldn't suppress the urge to put her in a Dolce & Gabbana animal print dress for one of the shots. In any case, I think she looks great.

every positive step that happens for black models or designers, you have to taint it with a critique. she can't wear one animal print dress in an entire spread devoted to her? really? there's so much right about the editorial and yet you focus on the one thing you think is wrong.
is there any situation in which you'd allow a black model to wear a print that references africa? or would you forever ban all stylists from dressing models in outfits that might intersect with their heritage?
i keep your blog in my feed reader because i appreciate your underrepresented point of view on the industry, but your pervasive negativity is almost too much to take sometimes.

That's kind of what I do. Black models are put in animal print clothing so often that I can't help but comment on it when I see it. And yeah, to me, it does tarnish the spread a bit. I guess you missed my other comments about it also being a very nice spread in which she looked great. I'm not a cheerleader for the fashion industry, I just call it like I see it on my blog. Sorry if you can't take it sometimes but thanks for commenting.

i know that's what you do, and so it was probably silly of me to even make the comment. i didn't miss the positive remarks; what i noticed - what they threw into relief yet again - is that there are very few completely positive posts on this site. it's hard (for this reader, at least) to regularly read a blog that's all about what someone DOESN'T like.
i know there's not a lot to be positive about in terms of race and the fashion industry, and you do a thorough job of taking it to task. i guess i just wanted to say, "i'm listening, but man, this is depressing."

Fair enough :) Thanks for replying.

So, I love your sight Brigitte. It's like everything I want to say completely ripped from my tongue and pasted on a web page. I love her Harper's Bazaar edit. Love Chanel Iman. On another note. Ol girl Wakema Hollis is rocking the perm. I know you made a post about her a while ago and you commented on her natural hair. Sadly, it is no longer. Do you remind if I refer to you as Fetch?

Yeah, I've noticed that Wakeema's fro seem to be a thing of the past :(

...I personally think Chanel Iman is overrated. I just don't understand all these non-stop posts about her.
