Nina Keita - J Crew Online

Michelle Obama is often spotted wearing clothing by retailers such as The Gap, H&M, and J. Crew. J Crew went so far as to build a special page on their website highlighting the new First Lady's pics.

I admit to being a J. Crew junkie. I'm always stalking to website and stores looking for deals on sweaters, pants and flats. One thing I've always kinda disliked about the company is the fact that they rarely use black models. When they do use non-White models, the models (particularly the females) are usually of the "ethnically ambiguous" variety.

I was surprised today when I logged onto the site and saw pictures of dark skinned beauty Nina Keita in the "new arrivals" section.

I wonder if it's just coincidence of part of a larger Obama effect. Probably the former but you can't stop a girl from dreaming.

I do feel it is part of the Obama effect. We will probably see more of it. I'm looking forward to see how it's going to reflect in movies to come.

As much as I log on J Crew, I never took notice of this model. She is stunning. I also peeped a new American Vogue spread with up and coming models that include different races. Along with the post below I guess things are going through a slow and gradual change, but a definite change.

I'm so happy you're posting again. I really do love your blog.

I remember JCrew back in the 80's when they were catalog only. They've come a long way. She's an attractive young lady.

Nice to see them show the future 1st lady some love.

I love J. Crew as well. In the stores (in L.A. where I used to live) they had a very diverse staff but I agree with you regarding the female models in the catalog (the men were all different shades).

Very nice. I'm so glad they are weathering the storm gracefully.

I like that Michelle Obama buys clothes from places that lots of folks do - whether that's a strategic move on her part or just her usual routine. And she shows that you can do this and still be incredibly stylish, even if you aren't dripping in labels. It really puts a different emphasis on class and who will be living in the white house. And I don't mean "class" as in "classy".
