Essence Magazine 1974 - Pat Evans - "The Name of the Game Is..."

The copy isn't great. I just hope it's clear enough to read.

Wow! Powerful words, and they ring true today, especially the part about "...in one agency, they will have at least 85 per cent white models that look alike", but talk about signing more than one or two token Black models and TPTB start yammering about how "if we take another Black girl, it will be a Black agency."

And also: "[the world of modeling] won't ever be until we get more BLACK-OWNED products, ad agencies, magazines, and most of all Black-owned minds."

Thank you for scanning this. I have printed it out and will save it.

Wow--speak on it, Pat!

I believe the black photographer to whom she refers is Gordon Parks--he didn't photograph black models in his fashion work that I'm aware of.

@carla - I also wondered if she was talking about Gordon Parks.

Gordon Parks was one of the fashion photographers for Essence in its first year. He even trained some of its new photographers during Essences first months. I find it hard to believe that it was him. Essence 25th Anniversary book talks about him in the first chapter.

Pat Evans is teaching in Monroe County, Pennsylvania. She just did a class in makeup. Here's a link to an article in the Pocono Record: http://www.poconorecord.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20091101/NEWS/911010335/-1/news
