Page Six Magazine Interviews Chanel Iman

On difficulties faced by models of color in the industry she vents:

“It’s not just black girls. It’s ethnic girls in general: Brazilian girls, Hispanic. You really don’t see a lot of Asians either. A lot of designers think that if every girl on the runway looks exactly alike, then people will come to the shows and buy the clothes because they won’t be focusing on the models….It’s not even just runway either… us ethnic girls should be getting a lot of the covers too! I would love to be on half of the campaigns these [white] girls are booking, all looking exactly alike. It’s not right. It’s not fair.”

Chanel also talks about her dating life, her relationship with mentor Tyra Banks and all those rumors about her in the upcoming issue of Page Six magazine, which will be inserted into copies of this Sunday's New York Post.

Well, I hope she knows that there are Black Brazilians and spanish speakers of African descent as well.

Black and Brazilian or from the spanish speaking diaspora is not an oxymoron. I wish ppl would get that. The slave ships didn't just stop in the U.S.

Anyway, I think she's an adorable young lady, though frighteningly thin. I hope she continues to find work.

@SDG, You couldn't be more correct. Hell, most slaves during the Atlantic Slave Trade most slaves went to Brazil! Wherever there was sugar/cotton, there are black people. I guess the difference comes with the identification, many people of African-Descent in the west don't consider themselves Black like we do in the United States, but that's a whole different topic.

Anyway, I'm proud to see Chanel Iman getting work. It's a damn shame that the only campaign she got this season was DKNY Jeans...WTF!? It's so obviously racist that it's just illogical. This girl walked for 50+ designers during spring/summer 09 and only scored DKNY multi campaign!??? While these white chicks who all look exactly the same (PRADA!!!) get 5 and 10 ads. And, let's not start on how horrible the fall winter season has been for black male models so far......

I'm just starting not to care anymore. It seems like no one else does....
