Jourdan Dunn - Mom to Be

Vogue.com broke the news on their site with an article filled with suggestions on what the 19 year old supermodel in the making should wear in the coming months. Dunn is reportedly due to have a son in December which means that we probably won't see much of her during Fashion Week this fall.

Reaction to Dunn's pregnancy seemed overly judgmental on message boards this morning with some people expressing "disappointment" that the teenager (who is also a legal adult with a steady income) is pregnant.

For the record, lots of models start families very young. I hope that after the birth of her son Jourdan's career will continue to flourish, like supermodel Natalia Vodianova, who also gave birth to a child at age 19 with much less finger wagging.

If you're young when you do it your body bounces back faster, surely that's important for a model!

I'm happy for her. She's conquered fashion, now she takes on motherhood.

I love your blog. Well stated bout the double standard between Jourdan and Natalia. It's interesting to observe the difference in how the two are handled. Natalia's story is always told as a Russian rags to riches fairy tale. I suppose some people prefer to use Jourdan's news as a means of perpetuating a tired stereotype of unwed black teenage mothers - however her reality might differ. Thank you for providing a forum where that doesn't happen!

While I lament whenever a young girl gets pregnant or married young for the simple fact that your 20s are meant for WILDIN' (at least in these modern times), the truth is that women have been having babies in their teenager years since FOREVER and the only problem is when the young lady doesn't have the means to support that child. Jourdan Dunn has got more than enough means, and if you look at another young and well-to-do teen mother Solange Knowles, it is clear that they can still keep it poppin and follow their dreams, and do it even bigger post-partum!

@Camille - I agree but mostly because personally, I could not imagine what my life would have been like if I had a kid at 19 instead of 33. It took me 30 years just to get my act together and I also didn't have the benefit of a high paying career and a supportive family. I hope that my kids wait until their over their 20s to start families too but I don't think that young mom = bad mom either.

People are probably more inclined to judge because it appears as though she is a single gal. If, for instance, they knew she was married or had a serious partner, they would probably regard the situation differently, and as being closer to that of Natalia's.
Because there are few details other than that she is due in December, people tend to think the worst.
My opinion is that she has always come across as a responsible girl with her head properly screwed on, so if she thinks she can be a good mum, I'm sure she will. Hope to see her back on the runways eventually.
