Same Old Story at Vogue Brazil

I spied this cover over at Jezebel. Brazil  may pride itself on being a "racial utopia" and has the largest percentage of individuals of African descent outside of Africa but when it comes to fashion, magazines and runway shows remains largely brown free despite the successes of models like Graice Carvalho and Emanuela de Paula (featured with other Brasilian models below.) Recently, black models protested the fact that they were excluded from auditioning for runway shows during Fashion Week. In spite of the attention the issue garnered, Vogue Brasil continues to only feature fresh white faces on its covers.

I don't know when I'll get an opportunity to travel there myself but I am curious if there are any magazines there that cater to black women.

I feel the same way about this as I do about Vanity Fair every time it promotes the fresh faces in the industry. Bland, prettyish white girls, though sometimes they add a token Zoe Saldana or Rosario Dawson.

Deep sigh, but it's expected.

How can we expect change unless there are more black magazine editors, publishers, and designers?

I saw this on Jezebel too. Magazines keep disappointing me. Check out the "Black but Invisible" campaign on my blog. We have to do something about this.

I recently picked up "SHE Caribbean" in St. Martin and was amazed that it was completely filled with women of Color and women that represent all the Diasporas of the Caribbean. Even the advertisements had us represented! The only negative thing I can say about the magazine is that it only comes out bimonthly and the feminist in me isn't too keen on word choices/titles for some articles, but having myself and my culture affirmed makes this magazine a treasure.

Bianca, thank you. I put in my order for the She Caribbean subscription. That seems like my kind of magazine. They show black women of every hue: Beautiful. Thanks again.
