Chanel @ GUCCI - Don't Call it a Comeback...

Chanel Iman, who has worked an astonishing 40 shows this catwalk season between New York, Paris, and Milan, made headlines when she showed two looks for Gucci Spring 2009.

Fashionologie, reported that she became the first black model in a Gucci show since Tom Ford left and was replaced by Frida Giannini in 2005. Iman was the sole non-white model on the stage that was populated almost exclusively by models with nearly identical blonde shoulder length hairstyles.

I love Chanel but I feel like now all models are, are expensive hangers. I don't find hangers aspirational. Only people.

I am so glad to see Chanel getting so much work but I still don't like the idea that there can only be one in demand non-white model at one time. It sucks that white models get to share the spotlight while the black models who are just as good or better seem to have to sit back and wait their turn.

I agree with anonymous. Chanel appears to be THE "go-to" Black model these days, which is good for her, but not so good for other Black models trying to get a foothold in the industry because TPTB will fall back on the lame excuse that they "already have a Black girl" and don't need anymore Black models with a similar look, or some such nonsense. And in the meantime, they'll continue to use a bunch of a bunch of assembly-line white models. Business as usual.

Is anybody else going to comment on how much this child is disappearing before our eyes? Do we not think it happens to the (few) black girls, too?

@anon above- the child has always been very boney. Keep your eye on Arlenis, she has a figure like Naomi. She did well in NYC but not in Paris or Milan. I bet it has something to do with her weight.

@lapetitediva-Channel is one of three go to blk models. Jourdann Dunn and Arlenis are the other two.

@Bridgette- Jourdan will share the cover of British Vogue Nov with two other models.

I think Chanel Iman is overrated...you want a real black model? SESSILEE LOPEZ. That girl looks like an egyptian/somalian empress from the 14th century. Perfection personified. Why GUCCI would pick Iman over Sessilee, I wonder.
