Vogue's King Kong Issue Fails to Scare Up Big Numbers

In spite of all the controversy surrounding the LeBron James/Gisele cover back in April of this year, the issue did not prove to be a winner at the newsstand for Vogue Magazine. According to Portfolio and ABC Rapid Report, the issue sold 350K copies at the newsstand compared to the 452K copy average for last year in this quarter.  The LeBron/Gisele cover was the worst selling April issue since 2001 (which featured Renee Zellweger on the cover.) That said, it is still not the worst selling issue of 2008, so far that honor belongs to the May issue which featured milk toast actress Gwenyth Paltrow.

In the words of Nelson Muntz, "HA-ha!"

Everybody knows that American Vogue is the WORST - completely lost its appeal. It was so much better in the 90's. Anna and take André both need to step down. French Vogue is quite good, but I'm still waiting for the Italian Vogue to get on newsstands in Brussels. I can't wait to get some colour.

BTW...I think your blog is fantastic!

I'm glad that the "King Kong" cover didn't sell very well. Although I'm sure that Ms. Wintour won't get the hint. I don't really know but given the state of the economy, people don't want to spend their money on fashion magazines that are increasingly out of touch with the public (and are filled with tons of advertising). I'm glad that the GPaltrow issue didn't sell either. She bugs the hell out of me. I guess beauty really is in the eye of the beholder.

I agree. I think '91-'94 or '95 were the magazine's peak years. I remember having a subscription and eagerly anticipating the next month's issue in my mailbox.

Speaking of awful covers, the Nicole Kidman cover for the July issue gets my vote. When I saw it in the grocery store I thought, "That picture looks like an outtake!" Everything about it just looked...off to me. I don't understand why anyone thought that was a good cover image.
